I love Greg - loved his performance in the Natty against Texas. But to argue that NFL, with their pitiful playoff season matters (I live in Charlotte, so I think I have standing)? Bollocks. NFL viewership continues to decline, especially as they appeal more to the "woke". Memo to the NCAA: We like FOOTBALL. Keep down your new progressive track, you'll see CBS, ESPN/ABC and NBC looking to renogitiate as viewer numbers tumble. Meanwhile, go to the Quad on Bama's campus during the upcoming LSU match-up - good luck finding space. I would much rather see the best teams compete - hopefully uninjured - in a small-group competition than some also-rans who luck themselves into a potential 12-team position. And for the record, while I am a firm Bama fan, I went to the University of South Alabama for undergrad and Georgia State for grad school - neither considered a conference powerhouse (nor their conferences considered powerhouses, truth be told). But as long as they don't play Bama, Go Jags, and Go Panthers!

This will be great for everyone. The SEC gets to show off with 3-5 playoff teams. AND The Mid-Majors that are tired of getting snubbed will get their chance. AND It could help spread some recruiting power outside of the top 5 or 6 teams that are in the current CFP every year.
Street Disciple
Expand the playoffs to 8-10 teams top 4 get a bye week if you do best 10 then you have 5 seed vs 10 seed 6 seed vs 9 seed 8 seed vs 7 seed but if you do best of 8 then you have 1 & 2 get a bye week 3 vs 8 4 vs 7 5 vs 6 which would cause room for upsets and top 2-4 teams to actually play harder to get the bye week rest players for an extra week and then get ready for the remainder of the playoffs

Wa wa wa, the 4 best really is perfect,it should be hard to get in, I could live with 8, but 16 is ridiculous, I guess 12 isn't as bad as I thought with the top 4 getting a bye, some people want every team and their mama in it, it's going to be funny when BAMA gets in as a 7or 8 seed then still wins it all, what are you people going to cry about then I wonder, more expansion, limit 5 stars even though everybody has equal access to all players, ROLL TIDE ROLL we have SABAN we're going to win

@Jeremy Terry BCS years in which there were significant problems: 1998 - KState - Tulane 1999 - KState - Marshall 2000 - Miami - Washington 2001 - Oregon 2003 - USC 2004 - Auburn - Utah - Boise State 2006 - Michigan - Boise State 2007 - Missouri - Hawaii 2008 - Utah - Boise State 2009 - Boise State - TCU - Cincinnati 2010 - Boise State - TCU 2011 - Oklahoma State - Boise State - Houston In 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2010, and 2011 Teams ranked in the Top 10 didn’t even make major bowls.....
Brian
Brian Oy oldin
@Jeremy Terry Considering that the BCS had problems YEAR ONE, went through 3 revisions to the selection process in the first four years and then was involved with a multi-State class action $250 million anti-trust and fraud lawsuit followed by a US DOJ investigation and US Senate Hearing investigation for fraud, anti-trust and corruption case...... I’d say your difference of opinion has been overruled. Do you realize how close the NCAA and BCS came to being found guilty of violating the Sherman and Clayton Anti-Trust and Patman-Robinson Price Discrimination Acts? Those rulings are NON-NEGOTIABLE, and carry multi-hundred million to billion dollar penalties and usually resulting in splitting apart companies and organizations. Those are extremely severe ramifications. Why do you think two weeks after the senatorial hearings the BCS and NCAA announced they would create playoff in 2011? You may think I have a tin foil hat, but literally per the senatorial hearing dialogue (public record) the NCAA and BCS admitted they did not had plans for a playoff to be created. If they try to claim that these lawsuits were not directly responsible for the CFP formation and that they had plans for a playoff more recent than two weeks prior that means they committed perjury in a federal investigation in front of US Senate. That’s pretty serious. That’s jail time and a fine in its own right. (And I’m not even getting into the multiple FBI investigations and convictions for BCS bowls) Yeah that system was extremely f@cked up.... we do not want to go back that.

Good for the SEC. They have a built in advantage though because a majority of the football players are born and raised in the southeast part of the country. Without demographic change or migration to other parts of the country this advantage will remain for a long time.

Paul is the strangest fanboy of Saban. Don't get me wrong Saban is a great coach, but he does have a lot of money and program infrastructure to support him. I don't think he's actually a football genius of any kind. There are much better coaches out there that just don't have what Saban has, in their own programs yet. Eventually the Saban era will end. Playoff expansion is the key.
Hackermusic
Hackermusic Oy oldin
What they don't have that Saban has is his ability to run a program down to the smallest detail, and outwork everybody else. They have passed rules to try to stop that advantage but it never works and usually backfires.

He is a genius in the way he runs his program and recruiting. There may be better X's and O's coaches out there, and there plenty of schools that have just as much cash to throw at their football program (Notre Dame, USC, Michigan) but they can't replicate even a 1/4 the success of Alabama with Saban. An expanded playoff giving this man even MORE chances to be included in the postseason and win a championship won't help anyone's case except Alabama. These #12 ranked 3-loss teams aren't going to change anything.

@Travis Sullivan Vandy, Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi State, & Arkansas wouldn’t ever come close to winning the B1G in any year since 2013 and they would never come top 3. Maybe the ACC and Pac 12 they would but definitely not the Big Ten. Every team in the SEC likes to use that “bEsT cOnFeReNcE” as if they wouldn’t lose by 30 to Ohio State.. Florida, Georgia, LSU, Texas A&M & obviously Alabama are the only teams in the SEC that wouldn’t get blown out by Ohio State rn. And I don’t think A&M was that good. I hope that you know the Big Ten would’ve had more schools than the SEC since 2014 had their been a 12 team playoff. It’s because SEC homers feel like they’re entitled to things they aren’t. Georgia has no where near the championships as Ohio State they’d most likely only win the B1G in 2017 & 2018 since the playoffs. Before that, they’d be lucky to win any since 2000.
Travis Sullivan
On any given year, there may be 1, at most 2 teams besides OSU in the big10, the ACC will be lucky to have 2, same can be said for the big12 as long as Texas is down. The Pac12 ... well, they may get a team in as long as the g5 has to play ooc against p5. ND will be in every year. Any given year in the SEC sports 3 top teams, all of which would look amazing in any conference that didn't have Bama in it.

@Travis Sullivan Alabama won the natty after the first year of the playoffs and the year before the kick six not the year the kick six happened auburn lost by 3 to Florida state in the natty after smacking Mizzou in the sec championship game then Alabama went to play Mizzou the following season in the sec championship game and beat the breaks off them to win the Natty in the 2015-2016 season
Travis Sullivan
It will make a lot of the high impact games less so, and will make bump in the road games non-existent. Sure, as a Bama fan, I'd love for the kick6 to be washed away and forgotten because Bama went on to win a natty that year. Or a rematch with Cam where our CBs weren't dealing with naggling injuries in the second hald.

As a Bama fan/alum, I'm against the change, no matter how much it benefits us for 2 main reasons: removes significance of clutch games and the kids arent being paid. (And no, the scholarship isn't payment. TV deal alone, kids should be making 50k a year on top of scholarships, room and board, after taking out expenses for the SEC)

Jeremy Terry
Jeremy Terry Oy oldin
"Don't put them at risk " it's their decision to play, nobody is forcing them.Yep, start paying them and you'll see college football become the NFL which by the way is tanking in viewership and sales because of that money and politics overpowering the love of the game. It's funny listening to fans tell the players that they know what's best for them . As a player who just played college ball for four years, I can tell you the overwhelming majority of players do not share your view. The potential to make big money is what drives the motivation in players in college football to get to that point. You want a decline in collegw football? Replace the motivation with money now and see what happens. By the way, the value you dont see in an education? Im using that right now to run my own business. Risks are a part of life, everyday with anything you do. Its not up to you to decide the risks for others.
Travis Sullivan
@Dirk Ketron Those are not all things that every university has, and again, those the TV deal is an addition to what the universities already make, which is a large sum. Plus doners and other things each of the universities make, plus bonuses for post-season games, plus additional bonuses for those who make the big games/playoffs (which most of the teams who have the highest cost do) doesn't invalidate my post in the least. Pay the kids, or GTFO with that nonsense of extra games.
Dirk Ketron
Dirk Ketron Oy oldin
@Travis Sullivan you forgot the rest of the coaching staff, doctors, physical therapist, training staff, nutritionist, field maintenance staff, stadium upkeep, travel expenses, training facility maintenance and upgrades and a WHOLE LOT more that I'm sure I failed to list. My point being, it takes all that money they bring in to keep a top tier program in the top tier. Paying amateur athletes like they are already pros is just plain stupid. The kids play the game knowing the injury risks involved and are fine with it. Let them make money off their likeness or get a real job like the rest of the student body.
Travis Sullivan
SEC TV deal, 300 million dollars annually. This doesn't even cover other forms of revenues some programs get, nor bowl payouts. So, we'll ignore the bonuses and extras and base amount of income for the schools. 14 schools x ~100 players each. Take away say 100million in general upkeep, so we're working with 200 mil. Subsidize all the head coaches with 5mil a year, drops that to 120 million. (Upper tier programs would pay upper cost out of pocket) That comes to about 85k a year/kid. Looking at about 30k a year for school, room and board, means the kids should be making at least 50k a year on top of that scholarship. So, really, tell me how much value is in that education when the kids are the ones at risk? And about HS, just like the FCS, lower level of competition means lower risk of major injury.
Travis Sullivan
@Dirk Ketron tell me you're dumb and don't understand the situation without actually saying it. NIL is not payment, but stopping the kids from getting exploited. Football is a high-contact sport with life-changing injuries. More games only means more risk for no money, while the schools make millions on TV deals and extra games. And the whole "they get an education" argument is just BS. Sure, if yearly tuition and board were over 100k for undergrads a year? Yeah. But if you think "education" is so important for these top schools/players who will competing, then why do most leave early? If education is so important, why even have a post season? That's around the time the kids should be studying for finals and preparing for new classes GTFO of here with that bs excuse as to why kids bringing in millions of dollars should remain unpaid.

@Darth Saban yep I wonder what they'll try next to try to overcome SEC dominance, especially Alabama, they'll probably come up with some kind of recruiting parity thing or something, I mean now there's that on scholarships, in early days of football they didn't respect southern teams, then they allowed Alabama to go to rose bowls, we started beating up those PAC 12 power houses PAC 8 then I think, they cried about that so they closed it to Big 10 vs PAC champ. LaDarius Baker
@Darth Saban they had a chance if it was a 12 but the only reason I say they wouldn’t have is because this new 12 team format gives 6 spots to the highest ranked conference champs. Those would’ve been LSU,Clemson, Ohio St, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Memphis. There are 7 teams that were ranked in front of Alabama that weren’t conference champs. Georgia, Baylor, Utah, Wisconsin, Florida, Penn St, and Auburn. Tbh all of those teams had better schedules that year than Alabama. Alabama only had 2 tough games that LSU and @ Auburn and they managed to lose both of those games.
Hmw Pond
Hmw Pond Oy oldin
I think a 4 team playoff is ideal. It puts so much emphasis on the regular season that you can’t even cruise thru a game (ala Fla vs LSU this year). Each regular season game has ramifications. Everyone was raising hades over the BCS 2-team playoff. And whaddya know. The top 4 teams each year have also been the top 4 with the BCS rankings system. I know the argument was how do you know these are the 2 best teams? Well now it’s easy...bcuz you take what you think is the top 2 and you add, again, what you think is the next best 2. It WORKS. Now, you want 12....that basically means Bama is in the Playoff each year Saban is around. They may slip up once or twice before they get things rolling and come in as the 12 seed and destroy everyone once everything starts clicking or they get healthy. Then we will hear cries for 16-24...it’ll never end if the outcome remains the same. One of the top 4 will win it each year and this will go on forever. But, we now have free agency, tampering, NIL...so let’s go ahead and ruin it completely. Why not?
